Wow - love that publicity photo, Helen - I've never seen it before! He looks a lot more relaxed in it than the one I use. Really glad you got so much from this book - it can be seen as one of his 'difficult' ones, but his strength of style always rewards I agree. I hope you'll try one of his comic novels one day, as a contrast. Thanks so much for covering it.


It's a nice photo, isn't it? He looks a little self-conscious in the other one.

Really, I thought this was masterly. And I was amused by Warner's scathing comments about Virginia Woolf, because it seems to me that Charteris himself has a great deal in common with her - that sense of the fluidity of character, that attention to prose. I'm sure that there is a lot there that I have missed on just one reading too.

Definitely going to track down his other work. Thank you so very much for sending me a copy and for championing him!
