Harriet Devine

Great poem. I love Heaney.

Me too!

Sometimes I have trouble with Heaney's poems, because I don't fully understand their cultural context, symbolism, and metaphorical allusions. I had to do a bit of research on this poem, but it was worth the effort. I wouldn't know a hawthorn if it reached out and scratched me, though.

Hello Violet, sorry I haven't replied before. All those allusions make his work ideal for A-level syllabi, but I love it all the same.

I don't think you have hawthorns in Australia?
